Polysorb from Covidien is a synthetic, absorbable, braided suture made from the copolymer lactomer —a synthetic polyester derivative of glycolic and lactic acid . The thread is coated with a special lubricating layer of caprolactone/glycolide and calcium stearoyl lactylate , which allows for particularly gentle tissue handling. Polysorb offers excellent tensile strength, good knot security, and controlled absorption, making it ideal for soft tissue sutures requiring medium-term retention.
Areas of application:
-
General Surgery
-
Gynecology and obstetrics
-
urology
-
Soft tissue surgery
-
Skin suture for moderate wound support needs
-
Pediatric Surgery
Advantages at a glance:
-
Braided, synthetic suture material with high knot security
-
Very good initial tear strength with smooth handling
-
Absorbable – ideal for medium-term suture support
-
Sliding coating for smooth gliding through the fabric
-
Good biocompatibility through controlled hydrolysis degradation
-
Uniform, predictable absorption
-
Sterile, available in various USP sizes and needle shapes
Further information:
Polysorb sutures are available in both violet and undyed colors and are offered in a variety of thread sizes and needle shapes. Absorption occurs via hydrolysis , with the material retaining its knot tensile strength for approximately 14–21 days . Complete mass absorption occurs in approximately 56–70 days —optimal for many standard surgical indications.
