The herniated disc simulator shows a schematic representation of two lumbar vertebrae with an intervertebral disc at approximately 2x magnification . By compressing the vertebral bodies , it is possible to vividly simulate how the inner core of the intervertebral disc bulges outward , causing a herniated disc (prolapse) . This movement impressively illustrates how spinal nerves become compressed and the mechanics behind the development of a herniated disc. The model is ideal for patient education , therapeutic teaching , and use in groups .
